Ringo Starr Can’t Bring Himself to Practice Alone
esquire.comRingo Starr discusses his new 2021 EP Zoom In, why Here Comes the Sun is the most popular Beatles song, and his love of Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Miley Cyrus.
It’s great to see Ringo looking very Ringoish. His hair hasn’t been this long in decades. It’s also interesting to hear how someone from the most famous band in history, who is 80, is dealing with the pandemic (pretty much like the rest of us).

The 50 Best Western Movies Ever Made
vulture.comThe history of movie Westerns more or less begins with the end of the Old West itself. We run down the 50 best examples of the genre, from The Searchers to True Grit and beyond.
Full disclosure: this list is in Vulture, which I don't really like, and doesn't include a single Western with Kirk Douglas or Audie Murphy, so it is suspect. But it's a goo starter list for people who don't know anything about Westerns.

When Concorde did a barrel roll: A history of the Airport films
cnet.comAs you social distance at home, remember that the '70s era was the golden age of the blockbuster disaster flick, and the Airport movies were the best of them all.
I saw “Airport ‘77” and “The Concorde... Airport '79” in the theater when they came out. I just rewatched both and the pure 70sness of these films is totally amazing. They are so much fun to watch. “Airport ‘77” has Jimmy Stewart, and Olivia de Havilland, and the costumes were designed by Edith Head. It’s crazy to me that I am old enough to have seen a film in the theater with their involvement.

With Traditional Movie Theaters Closed, Drive-Ins Are Thriving
mentalfloss.comWith the closing of traditional movie theaters due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, people are practicing social distancing at drive-ins.
I love Drive-Ins. When they started closing them in large numbers it seemed short sighted and foolish. There is something so American, and so mid-century, about them. But like most things, greed one the day, especially in places like Los Angeles. Not a single drive-in survives here. When I was a kid there were dozens. When I lived in San Diego, there were two, and now (I think) there is one. I hope that somehow this means that more of the theaters that made it into the 21st century will last longer and maybe even thrive.

One Of The Lockdowns’ Greatest Casualties Could Be Science
thefederalist.comPoliticians, journalists, and scientists have transferred the disease burden onto the working class. They’ve also undermined scientific inquiry.
This is a must read. Martin Kulldorff, Ph.D., is a professor of medicine at Harvard and Jay Bhattacharya, MD, Ph.D., is a professor of medicine at Stanford. You absolutely can’t ignore what these two men are claiming and still assert that you respect the science. The policy surrounding the lockdowns, masks, vaccines, etc. has been almost entirely political. The science was embraced only when it could be exploited in service of the politics.

The Miseducation of America’s Elites | Bari Weiss
city-journal.orgAffluent parents, terrified of running afoul of the new orthodoxy in their children’s private schools, organize in secret.
I graduated from Crossroads School for the Arts & Sciences in Santa Monica. It is at least as totally hypocritical as any of the schools cited here. They are so "woke" that they sent out an email to parents and alumni during the riots last year stating that it was "racist" to oppose the destruction of property. Meanwhile, they tolerate, and encourage, antisemitism and even prop up alumni who are blatant racists and Jew haters. The alumni and parents are too cowardly to say anything. I spoke up and was kicked out of the alumni Facebook group and removed from all alumni mailing lists. These people, at all of these schools, are fascists posing as "liberals." Of course the school, which drones endlessly about "dioalogue, "conversations," and "inclusivity" refused to even discuss and of this. They are absolute cowards.

The Deterrent Message Iran Needs to Hear
nationalreview.comThe Biden administration can’t let the latest Iran-backed attack on American forces in Iraq go unanswered.
I have zero confidence that the Biden administration will ever be tough on Iran. I had no idea that this attack had even happened-it wasn’t widely reported by the media. No surprise when they are attempting to mask Biden’s weak Middle East policies, his weak stance on Iran, and obvious antipathy toward Israel.

Psaki accused of making fun of Space Force, refuses to apologize
foxnews.comRanking member of the House Armed Services Committee has called on the White House Press Secretary to "immediately apologize" for her response to a Space Force question during a Tuesday press briefing.
She should apologize. She is the press secretary. It is not her job to denigrate an entire branch of the military. It is obvious that people like Psaki, who has proven in the past that she views facts through a partisan prism, are only selectively supportive of the military: when that it benefits them.

The Vanishing World of Neon Motel Signs - Atlas Obscura
atlasobscura.comA photographer has spent decades capturing these symbols of Americana and the open road.
I love these old signs. Many years ago, before everyone had a camera on their phone, I wanted to put together a coffee table book about old neon signs. That was in the '90s. It is very sad to watch the rapidity with which these signs are disappearing. It was/is an endemic part of Americana. Worse, their replacements are the boring, generic, sameness of the typical 21st century roadside experience, which has replaced style with monotony. Not just hotel signs either, but all signage. Have you seen Las Vegas lately? It looks a lot more like any other new urban environment than Las Vegas. It's just another symbol of the current American desire to replace individualism with conformity.
